Reporting Annual Interest Rate Charges on Loan Statements

In today's business world, compliance with legislation is not just a legal obligation, but a key factor in the growth and success of any enterprise. Businesses must stay up-to-date with the latest laws and regulations to thrive in this environment and ensure business practices align with them.

The Commerce Commission New Zealand advises that it is necessary to include a clear breakdown of Interest Rates on Loan Statements to help borrowers understand the true cost of their loans. This move towards greater transparency is a positive step in ensuring that borrowers are fully informed about the terms and conditions of their loans.

finPOWER Connect - Show Interest Rate Breakdown Settings

A constant in finPOWER Connect called "ShowInterestRateBreakdown" determines whether the Annual Interest Rate charge is included. By default, the constant is set to "False" , and needs to be updated to "True" to activate.

It is recommended that clients who use the Loan Statement run the latest version of finPOWER Connect and that the constant above is configured as "True" to comply with CCCFA regulations.

Although the Interest Rates might be listed on statements already, the Interest breakdown must be included, as demonstrated below.

For more information pertaining to the requirements of Annual Returns please review the below guidance document produced by the Commerce Commission New Zealand in April 2022.

finPOWER Connect - Setup a Shared Folder & Dropbox for Document Manager

This blog post, is a guide to the process of setting up a designated folder on a networked computer drive to function as the root folder for Document Manager in both finPOWER Connect Desktop and finPOWER Connect Cloud. This process requires the Document Manager Add-On.

The finPOWER Connect Document Manager Add On allows documents and files to be stored against Clients, Accounts etc. This might include documents such as a scanned image of a Drivers Licence or a signed Loan Contract.

Utilising Dropbox to store Documents in the cloud, affords the ability to synchronize a network folder to Dropbox and use it as the main Document Manager folder. Effectively using Dropbox as a Document Manager within the finPOWER Connect platform.

This functionality allows users to conveniently upload files via finPOWER Connect or via the web using the Dropbox website. Files uploaded via the Dropbox website will be synchronized with all designated devices linked to your Dropbox account, ensuring real-time updates. These files will subsequently be accessible within finPOWER Connect, enabling users to easily add files by coping them using Windows File Manager.

Set-up Instructions

If the Document Manager folder is already on a shared drive, parts of this blog can be skipped, however the steps below which are covered in this blog will still need to completed:

Configure Dropbox on the computer that hosts your Document Manager files.
Move your existing Document Manager folder from its current location to a folder within the Dropbox folder.
Change the configuration of your finPOWER Connect Desktop and finPOWER Connect Cloud systems.

These Set-up Instructions assume that a Dropbox has been set up. To sign up for a free Dropbox account (5GB storage) go to the DropBox website . If Dropbox is not used, consider alternatives such as OneDrive for Business, (included in an Office 365 subscription), for sharing Document Manager files.

Backup Document Manager

Before proceeding with any changes, it is crucial to ensure that you have a comprehensive backup of your current Document Manager files. This extra step will help safeguard your important documents and data against any potential loss or errors that may occur during the process.

Select a File Server

A computer is required to host the Document Manager files. This can be any system within a network, provided it has adequate disk space and CPU capacity. We will refer to this computer as the "File Server." To discover the name of a Windows computer, open the Settings application and select the System tab. The computer's name will be displayed in bold text in the top-left corner of the information pane.

Create a Shared DocMan Folder

Navigate to the "File Server" computer.
If the Dropbox desktop app isn't installed, download it here: Download & Install - Dropbox
NB: The Dropbox installer creates its own root ( \Dropbox ) folder.
However, if you want the Dropbox folder to be "D:\Dropbox", select the D: drive when prompted to choose where you want the folder to be created.
Create a Document Manager folder inside the Dropbox folder. E.g., D:\DropBox\DocMan.

Share the Folder & Assign Permissions

Right-click DocMan Folder
Select Properties > Sharing tab
Click the Advanced Sharing button
A Windows User Account Control message may appear:
Click Yes to "Allow this app to make changes to your device"

Click the Share this folder checkbox
Ensure that the Share name is " DocMan"
Click OK (to return to the DocMan Properties page)

Click the Share button
Type Everyone in the text box
Click Add (you will see everyone appear in the list)
Click the Drop-down list in the Permission Level column of the Everyone row
Select Read/Write
Click Share (you may see another Windows Account Control message)
Click Yes (to see a confirmation box with the message "Your folder is shared"
Click Done > Close

Check if the Shared Folder has been Shared

Open Windows File Explorer on a different PC on the network.
In the address bar, type \\FSNAME\DocMan, where "FSNAME" is the name of your File Server.
Press ENTER
File Explorer will open to an empty Folder
Leave the Folder Open

Preload the new DocMan Folder

If currently utilizing Document Manager, transfer all the contents from the existing Document Manager folder to the shared folder accessed in Windows File Explorer in the previous step. NB: Ensure Document Manager Files are backed up prior to proceeding with this step.

Check Document Manager Synced to the Cloud

Open your browser and navigate to the Files page on Dropbox's website.
Check that the files copied to the shared DocMan folder are present in your Cloud drive . (It may take a short time for the files to upload from the File Server to the Dropbox server)
Add files to your Document Manager using this Dropbox page
Click the Upload button to start an upload (Ensure to select the correct folder for the Client or Application you are working with before you upload)

NB: Although Dropbox allows you to delete files, exercise caution, as they may be needed for Service Logs, Identification Items, and other objects. We strongly recommend using finPOWER Connect to delete files, as it will perform all necessary checks to ensure the files can be safely deleted.

Configure finPOWER Connect Desktop to use the shared DocMan folder

In finPOWER Connect select Global Settings > Document and Templates
Set the Documents path to the UNC path for the DocMan folder in Dropbox on the File Server. e.g. \\FSNAME\DocMan , where "FSNAME" is the name of your File Server.
Save > Exit Global Settings

Verify visibility of files in the Document Manager folder

Open a Client that has files in the Files tab - check that the content matches what was in the local Document Manager folder previously.
Publish a Document for the Client.- check that the Document that was published now appears in the Files tab.
Return to the Dropbox web page - check that the newly created Document file appears after a minute or two. You will need to navigate to the correct subfolder for the Client you were working with.

Configure finPOWER Connect Web Services to use the shared DocMan folder

In finPOWER Connect, go to the Tools > Web > Web Configurations page .
Select the Web Configuratio n you use in Web Services.
Go to the Documents tab - change the UNC Path to be the path to your Dropbox Document Manager folder. e.g. \\FSNAME\DocMan , where "FSNAME" is the name of your File Server.
NB: To check the name of the Web Configuration being used by Web Services, go to Web Services > Web Admin in your browser, and click the Configuration tab. Under "Other" , look for the Web Config item.
Save changes made.

Configure I IS to access the shared Docman folder

The shared folder must be accessible to the IIS Application Pool that runs Web Services. That may mean that IIS must run in the context of a Windows user that has permission to access the folder.
NB: For more information and detailed instructions, refer to the finPOWER Connect Web Services Installation and Configuration document , finPOWER Connect Web Configurations, Document Manager section.

Check finPOWER Connect Cloud & Web Services can access the new Document Manager folder

Open the Client that you published the Document for previously.
Go to the Files tab - check that the Document is in the Files tab.
Check you can open the Document from within finPOWER Connect Cloud.

Backup Document Manager

Select a File Server

Create a Shared DocMan Folder

Navigate to the "File Server" computer.
If the OneDrive desktop app isn't installed, download it here: Download OneDrive.
By default, the OneDrive folder is located within a User folder. However, a different location for the OneDrive folder can be chosen during the setup process.
Create a Document Manager folder within the OneDrive folder. E.g., D:\OneDrive\DocMan.

Share the Folder & Assign Permissions

Right-click DocMan Folder
Select Properties > Sharing tab
Click the Advanced Sharing button
A Windows User Account Control message may appear:
Click Yes to "Allow this app to make changes to your device"

Click the Share this folder checkbox
Ensure that the Share name is " DocMan"
Click OK (to return to the DocMan Properties page)

Click the Share button
Type Everyone in the text box
Click Add (you will see everyone appear in the list)

NB: To check the name of the Web Configuration being used by Web Services, go to Web Services > Web Admin in your browser, and click the Configuration tab. Under "Other" , look for the Web Config item.
Save changes made.

finPOWER Connect - Update New Zealand Post's Postcode .dat File

The finPOWER Connect Addressing Add-On enhances address validation within the finPOWER Connect platorm. The Add-on utilises a summarised NZ Post data extract containing Suburb, City and Postcode information to validate client addresses and assign valid postcodes.

For more comprehensive address validation, the Addressing - Full Verification Add-On incorporates data from NZ Post's Postal Address File (PAF). This enables precise formating and validation of addresses according to NZ Post's standards, including the actual Delivery Point ID codes.

These Add-Ons are particularly beneficial for financial institutions and businesses aiming to maintain accurate client address records, ensuring compliance with postal standards and improving operational efficiency.

This blog is a guide to the process of updating the New Zealand Postcodes .dat file. The file is updated by New Zealand Post quarterly and can be downloaded directly from finPOWER Connect or manually imported.

Update NZ Post Postcodes .dat file

To upade New Zealand Post's Postcode File:

From the Admin menu,
Select Post Codes and Adressing

Select the Address Full tab
Click the Download button (to download the Address File from Intersoft Systems website), or
Manually download from the links below.

Click the Import tab to import the update file.
Select the file AddressList_dat file from your Explorer location (where you have saved and unzipped the file)
Click Open to import the file (importing the full address verification file may take several minutes or longer.)

Click OK when the pop-up window appears advising that the file has been successfully imported.
Once imported, the Date Version, Created and Expiry dates will be updated

The Annual Return for the period 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025, must be provided to the Commerce Commission by 30 June 2025

Introduction

Commencing in 2024, the Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act 2003 (CCCF Act) requires that every creditor operating under a consumer credit contract furnishes an Annual Return to the Commerce Commission in a prescribed manner.

The purpose of requiring an Annual Return is to support the Commission’s monitoring and enforcement functions by providing information about the consumer credit market. The information that needs to be present in the Annual Return focuses on the volume of credit being advanced through consumer credit contracts, including the sub-set category of high-cost consumer credit contracts.

An annual return must be provided by every lender unless an exemption applies. The New Zealand Commerce Commission advises in their guidance documents that you are deemed to be a lender if any or all of the following apply:

creditor under a consumer credit contract as set out in Section 11 of the CCCF Act;

a creditor under a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) Contract as defined in Regulation 3(1) of the Regulations;

a mobile trader under a credit sale where goods are sold to a natural person as set out in Section 16A of the CCCF Act; and/or,

a lessor under a lease of goods as set out in Section 16(1) of the CCCF Act.

The Annual Return must be provided to the Commission by 30 June each year and should relate to the preceding 12-month period 1 April to 31 March.

This blog details the processing of the Annual Commerce Commission report in finPOWER Connect, including a breakdown of how values are determined. It can assist in completing the Annual Report as required by the Commerce Commission New Zealand.

The Report Explained

7.1 - Number of HCCCC (High-Cost Consumer Credit Contracts)

7.4 - Material Changes

This list shows the number of material changes for all Consumer Loan Account Types, in the reporting period, grouped by Account Type.

Credit Limit Changes

The total number of Credit Limit increases taken place on each account per account type.

Account Class: Revolving Credit Loan.
Credit Type: Consumer.
Account Type, Credit Limit: Credit Limit 1 only.
Credit Limit value: Where the credit limit has increased from the previously set limit.
Entity: As set by user.
Reporting Period: As set by user.

NB: Will not include Credit Limit decreases.

Number of additional Advances

The total number of Advances made in addition to the Opening Advance/s, on each account per account type.

Account Class: All Loan Classes.
Credit Type: Consumer.
Transaction: Advance (not on Opening date).
Entity: As set by user.
Reporting Period: As set by user.

Number of Transfer Ins

The total number of Transfers made per account type that debit the account balance.

Account Class: All Loan Classes.
Credit Type: Consumer.
Transaction: Transfer (Debit only).
Entity: As set by user.
Reporting Period: As set by user.

The list shows the total Advances & Credit Limits for all Consumer Loans, in the reporting period, grouped by Account Type.

Total Loan Advances

The total of Advance transaction amounts per Account Type.

Account Class: All Loan classes.
Credit Type: Consumer.
Element Type: Advance.
Transaction Date: All transactions occurring during set Reporting Period, excluding reversed transactions.
Entity: As set by user.
Reporting Period: As set by user.

Total Loan Advances (including Transfers In)

The total of the Advance & Transfer amounts made per Account Type that debit the account balance.

Account Class: All Loan classes.
Credit Type: Consumer.
Element Type: Advance & Transfers (that Debit the account).
Transaction Date: All Advances & Transfers during set reporting period, excluding reversed transactions.
Entity: As set by user.
Reporting Period: As set by user.

NB : This value could be used in place of “Total Loan Advances” if you want to include Transfers that debit the account.

Total Credit Limit

The total of Credit Limit values per Account Type.

Account Class: Revolving Credit Loan.
Credit Type: Consumer.
Account Type, Credit Limit: Credit Limit 1 only.
Credit Limit: Highest Credit Limit value during the reporting period.
Entity: As set by user.
Reporting Period: As set by user.

Credit Limit is the highest Credit Limit for a loan during the reporting period, even if the account is presently closed.

Account Data

The Account Data list is “raw data” used to generate the report, comprised of all accounts that meet the specified criteria.

Column Breakdown

Account Class: All Loan classes.
Credit Type: Consumer.
Entity: As set by user.
Reporting Period: As set by user.
Sorted: By Account Id.
Fields only filled if relevant to Account Type.

Running the Report

Select - Process > Compliance > Annual Commerce Commission Report (New Zealand)

Select - An Entity to report on > Specify a Date range > Process

The Date range picks up accounts that have had an Open status within this period.
The report cannot be run in advance.
The report only Account types with a Credit Type of Consumer.

Click OK to confirm the message pop-up

Select Yes to open the file

If the U ser Preferences > Messaging > Email > SMTP settings are configured, and the User's contact email saved on the User Record, a confirmation with the Report attached will be sent.

Accessing previously Generated Reports

Select Recent in the Annual Commerce Commission Report wizard

Click on the ellipsis to drilldown on the required Report > Click ' Yes ' on the popup message to open the Report.

Running the Report

Select - Process & Procedures > Compliance > Annual Commerce Commission Report (New Zealand)

Select - An Entity to report on > Specify a Date range > Process

The Date range picks up accounts that have had an Open status within this period.
The report cannot be run in advance.

Click OK to confirm the message pop-up

Read the message, Click OK to proceed

Once the report is complete, click OK > Close

Accessing previously Generated Reports

Select Recent in the Annual Commerce Commission Report wizard

From Processes & Procedures > Downloads > Select the File attached to the relevant record.

Submitting the Annual Return

The Commission requires lenders to submit their annual return via a secure online portal available on their website.

Each lender should have received an email in late March or early April 2025. This email included a unique account reference, an access code, and a link to the online portal, allowing them to submit their annual return for the relevant reporting period. The email will be sent to the contact address listed for the lender on the Financial Service Providers Register.

Once the report has been prepared, reviewed, and confirmed, the company will need to manually upload the information to the Commerce Commission Portal.

Intersoft Systems launches finPOWER Connect Version 6.00

This blog post provides an overview of Intersoft Systems launch of v. 6 of finPOWER Connect.

In April 2025, Intersoft Systems celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of finPOWER Connect Version 6.00.00, their largest development initiative since the shift from finPOWER 5 to finPOWER Connect.

This major update marks the transition of the platform from Microsoft's legacy .NET Framework to the more advanced .NET 9. As the future unfolds, this modernisation, along with the updated technology stack, allows finPOWER Connect to take advantage of cutting-edge trends, including advancements in Artificial Intelligence.

Version 6 - Installation & Configuration Guides

It is strongly recommended that you contact mbsl in the first instance if you are considering upgrading to this latest version as there are important technical and planning considerations to be aware of before beginning the transition.

Version 6.00.00 explained

The .NET Framework was first released in the early 2000's and was adopted by Intersoft Systems for the launch of finPOWER Connect in 2010. In the years since, Microsoft has introduced .NET Core as the modern replacement for the .NET Framework. This has since evolved into the unified .NET platform, which is currently at v.9 and will be the foundation for finPOWER Connect v.6 .

Although Microsoft has no immediate plans to discontinue support for the .NET Framework, it is no longer under active development. The final version, 4.8.1, was released in 2022. Microsoft now recommends that all new development utilises .NET 8 or later.

Key advantages that .NET 9 has over the .NET framework:

.NET 9 is significantly faster and more efficient than .NET Framework.
Each new version of .NET (especially 6, 7, 8, and 9) has brought major performance improvements, especially for cloud-native and high-throughput applications.
.NET 9 unifies desktop, mobile, web, cloud, and IoT development under one platform.
Regular updates and security patches.
Smaller runtime footprint and faster cold starts in cloud environments.

Intersoft Systems anticipate that migrating finPOWER Connect to future versions of .NET (such as the upcoming v.10) should generally be straight-forward and included as part of a standard version update. However, this will ultimately depend on the changes that Microsoft introduces with each new release.

Risks to be wary of when upgrading to v.6

Before upgrading to v.6, it is critical to carefully evaluate several key factors, including conducting thorough and comprehensive UAT testing to ensure a successful transition.

It is strongly recommended that upgrades be carried out in close consultation with mbsl.

Installation

Initial installations will require .NET 9 to be installed alongside finPOWER Connect. Please refer to the installation guides above.

Scripting

It is imperative that any customer considering an upgrade ensures that their existing Scripting compiles and runs as expected. The Script Compilation Errors Report (Tools, Utilities) is a good starting point for this.

During internal testing, Intersoft Systems found that most issues stemmed from implicit references that were allowed in older versions. In .NET 9, these references must be explicitly defined. To assist with this, a References tool has been added to Global Settings (under Developer) to automatically apply specific references across all Scripts in the database.

Running a test compile and switching references on will, for the most part, sort out compile issues. However depending on the Scripting code changes may be required.

It is critical to verify that scripts not only compile successfully but also run as expected, to avoid potential failures after deployment.

Limitations with Microsoft Access

From v.6, Intersoft Systems can no longer recommend MS Access as a reliable method of storing data in a production environment. This is not due to MS Access itself, but rather the Microsoft requirement to run the 32bit version of the application to open Access databases.

With the move to .NET 9, the way that Scripts compile and run (including Summary Pages and HTML Widgets) has been migrated to Microsoft's Roslyn compiler.

Although there are a number of advantages over the previous Framework compiler, it is not optimised with 32bit applications. Microsoft has significantly reduced its support for 32bit applications in recent years and fewer and fewer applications continue to support it.

There are 64bit MS Access database engines available, such as ACE, however these do not enforce Security to a sufficient level for an application such as finPOWER Connect, so are not suitable replacements. Therefore, the recommendation is to no longer run MS Access production databases due to the likelihood of running out of memory somewhat randomly.

Recommendations for clients currently running MS Access databases in production (including address databases):

SQL Express
Provided free from Microsoft.
Has limitations, e.g. Microsoft limit the size of a SQL Express database to 10GB.
Will allow for an easy upgrade to full SQL Server once the database becomes too large.

SQL Server
Requires Microsoft subscription.
No limitations.

If MS Access must be used (though it is not recommended), upgrading the database beyond version 4.01.03 cannot be recommended.

VBA Documents are no longer supported

In v.6 and later, VBA Documents will no longer function. Any clients still using these types of documents should plan to replace them using Gembox alternatives prior to upgrading to v.6.

The Documents Administration library has been updated to highlight this with warnings, should a VBA-type Document be selected.

Similar to MS Access, VBA has been progressively de-prioritised by Microsoft and many applications are moving away from it. In addition, VBA Documents are not (and never have been) compatible with finPOWER Connect Cloud.

A database upgrade is not required between versions 4.01.XX and 6.00.00, providing the ability to roll back if the upgrade doesn't perform as expected, particularly in environments with customised databases.

finPOWER Connect Version 6.00

The User Interfaces for both Desktop and Cloud will feel immediately familiar to existing users. The most noticeable changes are in the Cloud version, where enhancements have been gradually introduced since v4.01.00 (when enabled via Device Settings). See: Device option to allow 'NEW User Interface' to be trialed. The new User Interface is now enabled by default and the existing option to switch it on has been removed.

Word and Excel VBA are no longer supported. The wording on the Documents form has been updated to indicate this.
A new "Clear Latest Version Used record" button has been added to the Global Settings form, General, Database page. This clears the record of the latest version used and therefore stops Administrator Users from receiving a warning message. This allows for a version rollback if required.
Database open message; Message notifying "WARNING: This database has been opened in version" now only displays for Administrator Users.
Support Information report now displays .NET Runtime folder information.
A warning is now given when opening a non-demonstration database in the 32-bit version when signed in as an Administrator.
The TxtStream.NET interface has been removed since it is no longer supported under Microsoft .NET 8+.

The Biometric Summary Page report has been updated to display warnings for any differences between the Client, or Applicant, data and the data sent to the service.

General

The Service Log Cleanse facility has been updated to only allow Credit Enquiry and Bank Account Enquiry Service Logs to be cleansed.
A new button has been added to the Web Access page of the Client Form, Generate Temporary Password. This is only initially available in finPOWER Connect Desktop.
On the Account form, Security page, Motor Vehicle items can now show a "Monitoring" block - like that shown on the Security Statement form, Security Items page.

Building a Script now reports how the file size in bytes of the generated .NET Assembly
A new Developer, References page has been added under Global Settings. This has an "Additional References" section that allows references to be included when compiling ALL Scripts. Additionally, this page allows "Legacy References" to be specified.
Script and Script Hosts and their interfaces had business layer code to cater for Optional References in the future. This has been obsoleted now that References can be added in Global Settings, Developer, References.
The Script Editor now supports LINQ.
The concept of Script Timeout has been removed.
finBL.Reports; Now gives access to the entire finPOWER Connect Reporting engine.
The ISWebService class in the business layer that is used for executing web request has been marked as obsolete. This is due to the underlying Microsoft class System.Net.WebRequest being made obsolete.

finPOWER Connect - Version 4.1, 6.0 & 6.1 - Intersoft Systems Strategic Plan

This blog post provides an overview of Intersoft Systems Strategic Plan to introduce versions .4.1, 6.0, and 6.1 of finPOWER Connect.

In order to assist Users to plan for the future, Intersoft Systems have crafted an outline of what the next major finPOWER Connect versions will look like.

Periodically Intersoft Systems experience significant transformations in the technological landscape that they depend on. These transitions encompass various shifts, such as the evolution from DOS to Windows, the migration from Access to SQL Server, the transition from VB6 to .NET, and the shift from Desktop to Cloud.

Considering this perspective and observing the trajectory of technology, Intersoft Systems has presented an enhanced Strategic Plan for the future of finPOWER Connect over the coming years.

NB: This article pertains to the introduction and use of technologies. It does not specify which version will have new features. etc.

Where is technology headed?

The Cloud/Web

Automated functionality

Where is finPOWER Connect headed?

Technology is changing and finPOWER Connect needs to keep up with changes.

The Cloud/ Web
By moving to the Cloud, some functionality in finPOWER Connect simply cannot be transferred.
For example, Page Sets cannot be used in finPOWER Connect Cloud, so Page Sets should be avoided; use HTML Widgets instead.

For now, there are no plans to make finPOWER Connect solely cloud based
however, the goal is to reach a point where everything can be run in the Cloud

Fine tune interfaces to provide more functionality and flexibility out of the box.

Remove old code/ functionality (where possible) to lessen code maintenance and to provide a better service to Users.

Version 4. 0

Focus on finPOWER Connect Cloud
Remove some obsoleted functionality
Released in December 2022.

Version 4.1

Some database and functionality changes.
This will break compatibility with version 3.4 and 4.0 database versions.
Whilst some database changes provide a pathway to additional functionality, these may be delayed until 6.0 and 6.1.

Version 6.0

Technology changes – move to .NET 8 (from .NET Framework 4.8).
This will keep compatibility with version 4.1 databases.

Version 6.1

More database and functionality changes.
This will break compatibility with version 6.0 databases.

. NET Framework v .NET

finPOWER Connect is currently built using Microsoft's .NET framework.

Microsoft .NET Framework

In 2019 Microsoft announced that version 4.8 was the last release of the .NET Framework.
There will still be updates, primarily to support Windows and Security updates.
The .NET Framework 4.8 will continue to be distributed with future releases of Windows and will be supported for as long as the version of Windows it was released with is supported.
Windows 10 – released July 2015, end-of-life is October 2025.
Windows 11 – released October 2021, likely 10 years from release per Windows 10.

It is the final version of the .NET Framework, all future work going into the .NET platform.

Microsoft .NET

.NET is the future as the .NET Framework will not be developed further.

.NET i s cross platform, i.e., not just Windows, but includes macOS, Linux etc
This does not mean finPOWER Connect will support these Operating Systems.

.NET 6 was released in November 2021
This is the first version of .NET to fully support Applications using Windows Forms (which includes finPOWER Connect)

.NET 8 scheduled release November 2023
This is the release Intersoft Systems will target with finPOWER Connect 6.0

What this means for users of finPOWER Connect?

Versions 4.1, 6.0 and 6.1 should be treated as major upgrades

Users need to examine their systems and make preparations
There are new utilities to assist in identifying areas for review
Discontinue the use of outdated functionality and obsolete technologies at the earliest opportunity
Refrain from developing new scripts or other elements using obsolete or outdated technologies
Evaluate and revise existing scripts and other functionalities

The technological landscape will largely retain its current configuration
Allowing Users to host their own Database, Application and Web Server
With the option to utilize a hosting platform like Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Connected every day of the year - New Zealand Banks now processing electronic payments 7 days a week

The world is on a fast pace trajectory of connectivity, which means for both commercial entities and generations of peoples from "Gen Z" to "Boomers" we are all having to navigate a myriad of automated processes and economic impacts in everyday life. To attain and retain our commercial and lifestyle choices effectively, efficiently and safely it is crucial to be in control of our finances.

No matter the day of the week or time of the year, as consumers we have come to rely on immediate, convenient and uninterrupted services to facilitate our requirements.

Extending electronic payments from a 5 day business week to 7 days (including Public Holidays) affords benefits for both Financial Services companies and their clients alike. Commerce no longer has to wait for a traditional business day to complete transactions and/or deals.

The ability to send and settle payment transactions for most domestic electronic payments and account transfers, such as Automatic Payments, Bill Payments, Direct Credits and Direct Debits over a 7 day period, should provide, earlier visibility of payments made to and from accounts and e arlier access to incoming deposits to improve cash flow.

This in turn provides a range of opportunities for the finance sector to update their business model by aligning their internal processes to the new payment regime, ultimately being of benefit both to the business and their clients alike.

Using finPOWER Connect 7 days a week

finPOWER Connect affords the opportunity to process payments 7 days a week including Public Holidays, however, in all probability business processes and documentation will need to be revisited to accommodate the change prior to implementation.

Our mbsl consultants are versed in the requirements needed for finPOWER Connect to receive, reconcile and send payments 7 days a week. We are happy to discuss options and strategies that will best suit your business model and may ultimately be beneficial in improving cash flow, and necessary to remain competitive.

For almost all of our tenure in Information & Technology for the finance market sector, mbsl have been in the fortunate position of being able to be a corporate supporter to Auckland's Rescue Helicopters since 1996.

mbsl's employees work ethics and commitment have contributed immensely to making the company a success, which in turn has been the major factor in enabling financial support to such a critical and outstanding charitable service.

We know we are extremely lucky to have such a wonderful service in our community and are in awe of the amazingly brave men and women who daily help others in their time of extreme need.

The dedication of the operational & support staff to ensure the air rescue services can be provided to Greater Auckland, its outer islands and the Coromandel Peninsula, is second to none. Their professionalism, commitment, and determination to guarantee help when we need it, is to be commended.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust (ARHT) was established in 1970, making it the first civilian aero-medical operation of its kind in the world. ARHT operates three fully-dedicated Auckland & Coromandel Westpac Rescue Helicopters (two state-of-the-art Leonardo AW-169 helicopters and a BK-117) and a Rapid Response Vehicle as well.

Flight crews consist of highly skilled and experienced Pilots, Air Crew Officers, and Critical Care or Intensive Care Paramedics. Being the first civilian helicopter service in New Zealand to fly with Pre-Hospital and Retrieval Medicine Doctors on board has meant they can perform procedures usually reserved for the emergency room from the moment they touch down. Their helicopters were also the first to carry blood on-board, allowing patients to receive blood transfusions on route to hospital.

Mission numbers continue to grow, having undertaken 25,000 missions to date and exceeding 1,000 missions per year (for the past eigh t years).

Working 24/7, 365 days of the year, the rescue service covers the greater Auckland area, Gulf Islands and the Coromandel.

The Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust is a charitable organisation and relies primarily on the goodwill of the communities they help to ensure they can provide, vital, life-saving care when patients need them the most.

finPOWER Connect - Version 4 & 5 - Intersoft Systems Strategic Plan

This blog summarises Intersoft Systems Strategic Plan for introducing v.4. and v.5. of finPOWER Connect.

To enable Users of finPOWER Connect to plan for the future, Intersoft Systems have released a Strategic Plan that outlines where they believe technology is headed and their intentions for the next two major versions of finPOWER Connect, culminating in version 5.0 being scheduled for release in 2024. Having reviewed a number of options they have decided on a cautious approach that should provide many benefits in the long term.

NB: This article pertains to the introduction and use of technologies. It does not specify which version will have new features. etc.

Where is finPOWER Connect headed?

Technology is changing and finPOWER Connect needs to keep up with changes.

The Cloud/ Web
By moving to the Cloud, some functionality in finPOWER Connect simply cannot be transferred.
For example, Page Sets cannot be used in finPOWER Connect Cloud, so Page Sets should be avoided; use HTML Widgets instead.

For now, there are no plans to make finPOWER Connect solely cloud based
however, Intersoft Systems wants to get to a place where everything can be run in the Cloud.

Fine tune interfaces to provide more functionality and flexibility out of the box.

Remove old code/ functionality (where possible) to lessen code maintenance and to provide a better service to Users.

In 2019 Microsoft announced that version 4.8 was the last release of the .NET Framework.
There will still be updates, primarily to support Windows and Security updates.
The .NET Framework 4.8 will continue to be distributed with future releases of Windows and will be supported for as long as the version of Windows it was released with is supported.
Windows 10 – released July 2015, end-of-life is October 2025.
Windows 11 – released October 2021, likely 10 years from release per Windows 10.

It is the final version of the .NET Framework, all future work going into the .NET platform.

Microsoft .NET

NET is the future as the .NET Framework will not be developed further.

.NET is cross platform, i.e., not just Windows, but includes macOS, Linux etc
This does not mean finPOWER Connect will support these Operating Systems.

.NET 6 was released in November 2021
This is the first version of .NET to fully support Applications using Windows Forms (which includes finPOWER Connect)
Since this is the first version of the .NET Platform supporting Windows Forms we want to be cautious and let .NET mature first

.NET 8 scheduled release November 2023
This is the release we will target with finPOWER 5

Compatible Database

As far as practical we will maintain database compatibility
Especially for 4.0.0 and 5.0.0 releases
So a User can run, for example, version 3.4.x and 4.0.0 on the same computer and open the same database.
E.g., if you find you are using an obsolete function in a script you could continue using the older version while working on resolving the issue.

This does NOT mean functionality is backwards compatible
E.g., if you started using a new feature in version 4 and then reverted to version 3.4 the version 4 feature may cause version 3.4 to not work properly.
This is the same now - if running multiple versions of the same major/ minor version of finPOWER Connect.

What does this mean for finPOWER Connect Users?

Significant changes are on their way.

Both versions 4 and 5 should be treated as major upgrades.

Users should review their systems and prepare
There are new utilities to help identify areas to review.
Stop using obsoleted functionality and old technologies as soon as possible.
Stop creating new scripts etc. using obsoleted or old technologies.
Review and update existing scripts and other functionality.

The technology environment will remain largely the same as it is currently
You will still host your own Database, Application and Web Server.
Albeit, you may use a hosting platform such as Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Summary

finPOWER Connect must:
Move towards a full application in both the Windows desktop and Cloud/ Web Browser environments.
Move to .NET in the next few years.

Version 4
Focus is on finPOWER Connect Cloud.
Release in 2022.

Version 5
Focus on switching the technology platform from .NET Framework to .NET.
Release in 2024.

Users must prepare for these changes.

finPOWER Connect - Deposit Interest Guide

This blog covers Deposit Interest - both the Interest and corresponding Payout transaction if applicable.

Fixed Term Deposits

Typically, there are no Withdrawal or Additional Investments allowed for Fixed Term Deposits. This means the only Transactions during the Term of the Investment are:

Interest Transactions
Interest Payout Transactions

Therefore, it is safe to process Transactions in advance of today.

Account Processes for Interest Transactions, including Interest Payouts, can be done on Friday for the weekend.
Interest Payments for the weekend could be sent to the Bank for payment on Friday -
Friday, Saturday and Sunday's Interest is processed on the Friday.
The Interest Payout transactions are dated on the Friday, Saturday, or Sunday (as normal).
The Bank Transactions are exported and dated Friday.

On Call Deposits

There may be Withdrawals or Additional Investments on any day. Therefore, until all the transactions have been processed for the day, including importing Bank Transactions from the day before, Account Processes, including Interest should not be processed.

This is why Run Account Processes defaults the previous day for Interest Transactions and Statements.

Interest Transactions (Credit Interest and Payout)

The Interest Transaction is dated and treated as at the end of the day, i.e., overnight.

It will show after other transactions for the day.

The Payout Transaction may be dated the same as the Interest Transaction.

If dated the same day as the Interest Transaction:
It is treated as at the end of the day, i.e., overnight.
It will show after other transactions for the day.
The "Schedule Type" is "Interest Payout".
Otherwise, it may be moved forward and therefore:
It is treated as occurred during the day, i.e., it affects the Balance on the date of the Transaction.
The "Schedule Type" is "Interest Paid Out" or "Transaction" (see Process Interest Payouts later).

That means if dated 31/03/2021:

Interest calculated includes the day 31/03/2021.
The balance that interest is calculated on 31/03/2021 does not include:
The Interest Transaction itself.
The Interest Payout Transaction (if dated on the same day).

Compounded Interest

There is no payment so no issues around when the investor will receive funds in their Bank Account.

Paid via Cheque or Direct Credit

finPOWER Connect does not allow the dating of Interest Payouts prior to the current date.

This is because you can only create a Payment via the Banking System for today and the future.

Fixed-Term Deposits

Could be processed early and paid early if the Finance Company wishes. Refer to "Paying Early" below.

On-Call Deposits

Cannot be processed early as transactions may still be processed throughout the day. Therefore, Tuesday's Interest would be processed on Wednesday.

However, you are unable to payout Interest to the Investor via the Banking System for a previous day.
The Payment should be made on the Wednesday to the Investor.

What happens to the Interest Payout if the Interest Transaction is processed prior to today?

The Interest Payout will be rolled forward to the next Banking Day.
If this is on or after today it will be processed - the Interest Payout will have a Schedule Type of "Interest Paid Out" and its effective date will be the date of the Transaction, i.e., not overnight.
Otherwise, it will not be processed and effectively compounds the Interest.
You may run the Process Interest Payouts wizard to payout outstanding Interest.

Moving Payments from a non-Banking Day forward to a Banking Day -

If Interest is dated on a non-Banking Day, there is a setting on the Deposit Account Type to:
"Roll Interest Payout Date forward if it falls on a non-Banking Day?".
This means, for example, if the Interest Transaction is posted on a Saturday the Interest Payment will automatically be moved and paid on the Monday.

Transfers

Transfers move the Interest credited to the Deposit Account to another Account within finPOWER Connect.

There is no "Payment" via the Banking System, so there is no restriction with regards Banking.

A Transfer can occur on any day of the week.

Note, the Transfer is dated the day after the Interest Transaction.

This is because the Interest Transaction is not part of the balance on that day.

finPOWER Connect restricts the date of Transfers.

Transfers can be processed on the next Banking Day with a grace period of a further two Banking Days.

NB: the two Banking Day grace period is a hard rule that cannot currently be configured.

That means if Interest if credited on Friday and due to be transferred on Saturday, finPOWER Connect will allow you to process that up until the next Wednesday.
The next Banking Day is Monday and allowing 2 grace days is Wednesday.
If Interest is credited on Tuesday and transferred on Wednesday, you have until Friday to process it.
If the Transfer is not made, the Interest is effectively compounded until the next Interest cycle.

For example:

Friday - process Interest to Thursday -
Thursday's Interest credited and transferred on Friday.
Saturday, Sunday – closed
Monday - process Interest to Sunday -
Friday's Interest credited and transferred on Saturday.
Saturday 's Interest credited and transferred on Sunday.
Sunday's Interest credited and transferred on Monday.
Tuesday - process Interest to Monday -
Monday's Interest credited and transferred on Tuesday.

Capitalised Interest

Moves the Interest value to Principal - this depends on the Element defined on the Account Type.

There is no "Payment" via the Banking System, and it is not transferred to another Account; so, there are no date restrictions.

NB: T he Capitalisation Transaction is dated the day after the Interest Transaction - this is because the Interest Transaction is not part of the balance on the day Interest is credited to the Account.

Process Interest Payouts

Where a Payout or Transfer cannot be made because it is dated prior to that allowed the Process Interest Payouts wizard allows you to make these payments.

The "Schedule Type" of an Interest Payment created via the Process Interest Payouts wizard is "Transaction".

This means:

It affects the Balance on the date of the Transaction.
It is not shown at the end of Transactions for the day.

Paying Early

For Fixed-Term Investments you might consider paying Interest early. Even at a high Interest Rate, if Interest is paid early, the compounding effect may not be a significant cost.

For example:

With an Interest Rate of 10%, paying Interest early by one day is the equivalent of 10% or 10% for one day.
E.g., Interest on $100,000 @ 10% paid Monthly = $100,000 x 10% / 12 = $833.33. Interest for one day is $833.33 x 10% / 365 = $0.23.
E.g., Interest on $100,000 @ 10% paid Quarterly = $100,000 x 10% / 4 = $2,500.00. Interest for one day is $2,500.00 x 10% / 365 = $0.68.

Of course, over the entire Investment portfolio this could mount up – if all Interest is paid out rather than compounded.

If you are considering paying Interest early, then you should factor this into the Interest Rate you will pay.

Multi-Factor Authentication: Combating Cyber Criminals

Multi-Factor Authentication - an additional security layer for finPOWER Connect Cloud

As we move more of our business systems to a cloud based environment we can no longer depend upon a user being corporeally on the same network as a security factor. Additional security is paramount to ensure that that users accessing systems via the cloud are who they purport to be. Prompting a user for additional authentication does take longer, however is does assist to combat cyber criminals imitating or using brute force methods to hack systems.

finPOWER Connect Cloud now incorporates Multi-Factor Authentication ( MFA ) which adds an additional layer of security by obliging users to enter an auto-generated password (or code) when they sign in, either generated via an Authenticator app or emailed to their registered email address.

Web Administration Facilities

Both finPOWER Connect Cloud and Web Services have web-based Administration facilities.

These facilities do not support Multi-Factor Authentication. However, they can, and should in a production environment, be configured to "Allow local access only".

This means that the administration facilities can only be accessed via a browser running on the web server hosting the Web Services or finPOWER Connect Cloud.

WARNING: Version 3.03.04 introduces this option and it is enabled by default. This means that access to the Web Administration facilities, even for existing installations, will be restricted to a browser running on the web server.

Device Authorisation

Device Authorisation provides a mechanism by which, every time the User accesses finPOWER Connect Cloud from a new device (or web browser), they are sent a code via email that they must then enter to "authorise" that device.

This is a once-only form of Multi-Factor Authentication and has existed in finPOWER Connect Cloud since it was first launched. Users can view and maintain their list of authorised devices from the User menu, Manage Devices form (shown below) and, as of version 3.03.04, administrators can manage this list from the Web Access page of the Users form within finPOWER Connect desktop.

Note: Device Authorisation can be used in conjunction with the Multi-Factor Authentication functionality.

Multi-Factor Authentication Configuration

The Security page of the finPOWER Connect Cloud Configuration form enables two MFA options:

To exclude Users of particular Roles from having to enter a MFA code.
Allow User to defer re-entry of a MFA code for a number of days on a particular device.

Email Code

Reliant on the User having a email address defined on their finPOWER Connect User record, the Email Code works the same as the Device Authorisation, whereby at the time of signing in, the User is sent a 6-letter code to their registered email address. To complete the sign-in process the User must enter the code within the validity period of 5 minutes .

Authenticator App

Reliant on the User having installed an Authenticator App on their mobile device, at the sign of time of signing in for the first time, the User is prompted to scan a QR code using the app and the camera on their device. The Authenticator app will generate a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds . The User is required to enter the code to complete the sign-in process.

After the initial sign-in, the User simply opens their Authenticator app and enters the latest 6-digit code that is displayed for their "finPOWER Connect" account.

Note: This method relies on the Web Server hosting Web services to have an accurate date and time since the codes are time-sensitive.

Multi-Factor Authentication App Providers

Intersoft Systems have tested the below finPOWER Connect against the named Authenticator apps below. Each app differs slightly and there may be a requirement to sign up to use their services.

Signing into finPOWER Connect using MFA

The below 4 -step process is based on using the Google Authenticator. It is not necessary to have a Google Account to use this app.

1. The User signs in with their normal User Id and Password

2 . When clicking the "Sign In" button, the User is prompted to scan a QR code using the App. The Google Authenticator app starts with "BEGIN SETUP" and then "Scan barcode" (these apps refer to bar codes and QR codes interchangeably):

3. With the camera turned on, once scanned, the app will display a continuing regenerating 6-digit code which is then entered into the MFA form in finPOWER Connect Cloud.

4 . The User selects the "Finalise Multi-Factor Authentication and Sign In" button to sign in. Subsequent signing in will require the latest 6-digit code issued.

finPOWER Connect Cloud affords the option of a User not being prompted for an authentication code for a nominated numbers of days. This applies to the device that a User signs in from.

Multi-Factor Authentication Management

In most instances Users will install Authenticator apps on their mobile devices. When a User looses access to the Authenticator app, they will be unable to sign in to finPOWER Connect. However, the Users form within finPOWER Connect desktop has a "Create Emergency Code" button on the Web Access page. When selected, this generates a 6-letter code that is valid for 2 minutes and can be relayed to the User to allow them to sign in.

As Authenticator Apps retain "accounts" that are added when initial QR codes are scanned , a User will loose access to finPOWER Connect Cloud if a User's finPOWER Connect "account" within the app is deleted, or their mobile device is reset or lost. However, the Web Access page on the Users form within finPOWER Connect affords the option to "Reset Multi-Factor Authentication". When reset, the User is promoted to scan a replacement QR code at sign-in. The User should action immediately after their MFA is reset.

When a password has been changed a User is directed back to the sign-in form.

When a session expires due to inactivity, the User is required to enter a new MFA code. If not using an Authenticator app the User needs to click a button to send an email. NB: Emailed codes are only valid for 5 minutes.

External Applications Accessing Web Services

Enabling Multi-Factor Authentication for finPOWER Connect Cloud will mean that any external applications accessing finPOWER Connect Web Services will fail to authenticate.

To remedy this, Multi-Factor Authentication c an be disabled via the Web Subscriber record that the external application is using.

WARNING: If you disable MFA on the Web Subscriber that finPOWER Connect Cloud is configured to use, the sign-in process will fail as this presents as a configuration error.

Multi-Factor Authentication is an uncomplicated, effective tool for strengthening login security, safeguarding your business and data against security threats.

APYLID - A Biometric Interface that helps satisfy AML requirements

APYLiD - Another piece of the puzzle to enable and end to end

electronic journey within finPOWER Connect

APYLiD is an electronic verification system which collects necessary and supporting information to verify the identity of prospective customers. APYLiD uses biometrics, OCR (optical character recognition) and trusted data sources to validate customers names and addresses. Verifying the captured data against multiple trusted sources ensures clients will meet compliance regulations, including obligations under global Anti-Money Laundering (AML) legislation.

Negating the requirement to have signatures witnessed and documents certified by appropriate legal entities, APYLiD provides a flexible, customisable and integrated digital onboarding solution, that is simple and quick to complete, enabling the capture of customer information needed.

APLYiD does not store personal information, but provides the mechanisms required to complete customer onboarding checks. All personal information is encrypted and data is temporarily hosted in a protected server until verification is completed, then the data is permanently deleted.

APYLiD's own standalone portal and flexible open API has afforded an optimal end to end customer onboarding solution for our clients utilising finPOWER Connect's Web Services and Automation and Credit Enquiry Add-Ons. APLYiD can be launched directly from a client's profile account manually, or as part of a Workflow's Decision Card or Rule.

The Business user performs a standard Credit Enquiry on their customer by selecting "Aply" as their Credit Bureau Service, then checks the customers name and mobile phone number. The customer receives a link via text message which steps them through the document scanning and biometrics process without the need to download an "App". The link is sent via Text to enable the customer to access their camera in order to complete the biometric process.

The customer is prompted to take photos on their smart phone of their New Zealand or Australian drivers licence or their passport.
APYLiD extracts information from the photos that have been taken and gives the customer the opportunity to correct any errors.
The customer will be prompted to enter their current residential address.
The customer is then prompted to take a short video of themselves (i.e., the front and side of the face).
APYLiD's system matches the video against the photo on the customers driver licence or passport.
APYLiD checks the information provided by the customer against various sources, which includes databases of government and financial institutions in New Zealand and Australia.

finPOWER Connect receives the results once the customer has completed the steps required. The screen shot illustrates the outcomes achieved for Biometrics, Tampering Checks, Location and the PEP Watch List.

APLYiD also creates a permanent record, which is reported in PDF format, and resides on the Client Logs. The report depicts the following:

An overview, including whether is Outcome is a Pass or Fail
Submitted Data
ID Document Data
A copy of the ID Document
Tampering Checks
APYLiD AML
A Summary of the data source searched
Face Scan and how the pictures compare
Face match and "Liveness" breakdowns

Using world class facial biometric technology and machine learning to analyse multiple points on the face, and capturing accurate trusted data sources, APYLiD ultimately affords your business the confidence that your customer is who they say they are.

Intersoft Systems Limited have introduced a major release of finPOWER Connect. Version 3.04.00 includes an updated database along with significant new features for finPOWER Connect, finPOWER Connect Cloud and finPOWER Connect Web Services.

- Uploading of files can be disabled (more for demonstration installations than a production feature)

- Subresource Integrity (SRI) can now be applied to external resources where possible

- Content Security Policy (CSP) can be enabled

- All main record forms (Accounts, Account Applications, Clients, Security Statements and Workflows) now have a permission key allowing access to be restricted

- Permission keys added to restrict access to Email Message and SMS Message forms

Processes

- The Processes view now shows HTML Widget Scripts that are configured to show in the Process menu

- The Processes view icon now spins when a background process is running

- Running a background or long-running process such as Account Processes will now email the User once the process is complete or has failed

- New "Downloads" tab to show files generated by background processes or HTML Widgets

Clients

- Web Password can now be updated from the Web Access page

- Portal Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) can be reset and and emergency code generated from the Web Access page

Workflows

- "Skip" and "Unskip" item functionality added

- "Send Web Mail" now supported

- BankStatements "Bank Account Enquiry" items and other services are now supported correctly
